Introduction by:

Dr. Gordon Stone
Director of Information
and Clinical Effectiveness
Highland NHS Board

It is well known that men have higher rates of illness and premature death than women. Most specialised initiatives aimed at improving health are, however, aimed at women. Arguably health gains of at least an equal level to those achieved by these initiatives could result from services targeted at men.

One reason why such services have not been instituted is that the causes of ill health in men have arguably received less study. If we are not clear about the causes of the adverse health experience in men, how can we press for the means to remedy them?

This study, undertaken by the charity Men's Health Highland, brings together in a comprehensive way, the evidence and research on the causes of premature illness and death in men.

The report is thought provoking and bound to stimulate discussion on the way forward. As such, it is a valuable contribution to the area of men's health, and hopefully, will lead to this subject having a higher profile and subsequently to the introduction of measures which will bring about much needed benefits for men.
